Trick or Treat by Catherine Emmett and Laura Brenlla

It’s nearly Halloween and the perfect time to share Trick or Treat by Catherine Emmett and Laura Brenlla! This spooktacular book is most definitely a treat!

A witch is missing the final ingredient she needs for her “how to spot an ogre” spell. Where on earth is she supposed to find a little girl? Then, one spooky Halloween night, a little girl knocks on her door – she wants a treat or else she will trick the witch.

Well, the witch is the one that wants to play a trick on the girl, enticing her inside. The girl can’t believe how good the witch’s outfit is. But when the witch wants her to step into her cauldron she brings to wonder if the witch is up to no good. Perhaps the witch needs to be taught a lesson with her own Halloween trick!

Laura’s illustrations are brilliant and add to Catherine’s bouncy lyrical text. My daughter guessed from the sneaky expression on the girl’s face on the front cover that all was not as it seems in this story. But she had no idea what a clever twist was in store. This naughty witch certainly meets her match!

Trick or Treat is wickedly fun Halloween picture book. It is everything you want in a spooky tale and is a story my daughters have been asking me to read over and over again.

About Catherine:
Catherine grew up in Newcastle and spent all of her childhood reading books. When she grew up, she spent fourteen years making spreadsheets and not reading any books at all. After advising a group of young girls to find a career that they loved, she decided to take her own advice. She packed up her husband and her three young boys, moved to rural Essex and started to write picture books. She now spends her days surrounded by words, animals and noisy boys. When she needs a bit of peace and quiet, she can be found running (very slowly) across muddy fields.

About Laura:
Laura studied animation in her hometown of Madrid. But she decided that creating characters, and telling their stories in her own way, was so much fun that she became an illustrator instead. Rainy days are her favourites, where you’ll find her drawing in her studio beside her sleepy dog and a noisy little heater.
