Title: Baby Loves: Calm
Author: Jennifer Eckford
Illustrator: Anna Katharina Jansen
The Story:
Calm is the first title in a new board book series (Baby Loves) that introduces pre-schoolers to some of modern-day themes. From Aware to Zen, Calm teaches mindfulness and meditation concepts with a different word for each letter of the alphabet.
Favourite Spread:
Anna’s illustrations are perfect for babies who will love the big contrasts and simple images that perfectly illustrate Jennifer’s mindfulness concepts.
With much of the world currently experiencing some form of lockdown, the words which particularly stood out for me were: G for grateful, I for inspiration and V for vivid (which has a picture of a rainbow). Right now, we all need to find the joy in the little things.
The Verdict:
Now more than ever, mindfulness is something we all need in our lives. This board book is a perfect place to start teaching this important skill to young children. Most of the words have one page, but C for Calm has a double page and it really is the perfect title for this little gift book as it does sum up the feeling this book creates.
