“when pigs fly” has been a favourite expression of mine, ever since I was a child. I remember looking up at the sky when my Nan would say it. I had no idea that similar idioms existed around the world and what fun they all are! Raquel has brought each one to life from the Spanish phrase “when frogs grow hair” to the Yoruba phrase “when chicken have teeth”. The end papers show which countries are included.

Our favourite expression, originating from the Netherlands was: when cows dance on ice.

Raquel’s illustrations are lovely and fun; it’s great to see each culture represented. The name of the country is also hidden somewhere in each illustration which is a nice touch. My little girl thought the upside down crows were funny and I loved the fact the text was upside down too!

This is a wonderful, fun and original book that helps children learn about other cultures whilst giggling their socks off! We loved it.
