There Was a Young Zombie Who Swallowed a Worm by Kaye Baillie & Diane Ewen ~ #Review

Halloween is just around the corner, and we have another favourite to add to our collection of spooky-themed books (see our full list here). There Was a Young Zombie Who Swallowed a Worm by Kaye Baillie and Diane Ewen is a must-have!

As a child, my mum would tell me the story of the old lady who swallowed a fly. Kaye and Diane have given this much-loved tale a Halloween spin and fun new ending!

We open with the iconic twisted first line: There was a young zombie who swallowed a worm… I don’t know why he swallowed a worm, it made him squirm. And so it begins… zombie swallows a toad to catch the worm. But what will he eat to catch the toad?? Zombie eats more and more spooky creatures and very soon gets a bad tummy ache. Can you guess what happens next?

Diane’s illustrations are simply gorgeous, and my children loved them. Halloween involves some characters that can feel scary for children, particularly a zombie who is eating everything, but Diane brings so much humour in her illustrations that has led to a loveable zombie! There Was a Young Zombie Who Swallowed a Worm is a perfect blend of humour, nostalgia and spooky fun – an absolute must read for Halloween!
