The Frost Goblin by Abi Elphinstone & Fiona Woodcock ~ Review

Today, I am shining the festive spotlight on a beautifully illustrated, heartwarming story, The Frost Goblin, by Abi Elphinstone and Fiona Woodcock. This moving tale shows the reader that the deepest frost has the power to rekindle hope in anyone who’s lost it…

In Bertie Crash-Wallop’s noisy family, it can sometimes feel like there is no room for a quiet boy like him. But when Bertie meets a family of goblins on the night of the deepest frost, is it possible he might make some magic and discover his own place in the world?

This book took me by surprise. At first I was expecting a picture book, but actually it is the length of a chapter book suitable for age 7, but presented as a highly illustrated picture book. I think lots of children will find this particularly appealing, and it makes it a great book to share in families with children of a variety of ages. Fiona’s illustrations are stunning, and create a wintry vibe that fits the story perfectly. The story doesn’t have chapters but we read it over a series of days during advent which added to the drama of the story. The Frost Goblin would make a great family Christmas present.

I absolutely love longer stories told in the picture book format. Fiona’s illustrations are absolutely stunning and fit perfectly with Abi’s lovely wintry story. The Frost Goblin is a Christmassy book to be treasured for years to come.
