Title: The Bumblebear
Author: Nadia Shireen
Illustrator: Nadia Shireen
The Story:
Norman is a bear who loves honey and he has a master plan to join bee school in disguise. Although Norman is different, the bees welcome him in. Will he get his hands on their secret honey store or will he learn that there is something more important to him than honey? When the bees come under attack, can he save the day and fulfil his destiny to become a bumblebear? Alongside Norman, clever bee Amelia has a strong personality throughout the story and goes on a journey of her own.
Favourite Spread:
I love, love, love Nadia’s illustrations, they are fun and add humour throughout. However, if I had to pick a favourite (and there were many in contention) it would have to be Norman’s school planner. What a brilliantly creative way to depict life in bee school in just one spread. Every detail is accounted for, even the school badge at the top of the planner. I am in awe of Nadia’s genius.
The Verdict:
A knock-out concept and outstanding illustrations, this is a book that has so much to offer. This is a story about friendship, doing the right thing and being true to who you are. Nadia Shireen is a fantastic talent and I look forward to reading more picture books by her.
