The Story:
Cedric is a pumpkin farmer that dreams of growing up to be a knight. When he helps a real-life knight, he gets taken on to be a squire. And when it’s his time, he is made a knight. He goes off and fights a dragon but Cedric’s happy ever after is not to marry a princess, that’s not how he wants his story to end…

Favourite Spread:
There are some lovely illustrations in this book. I adore Cedric’s pumpkin armour and how it becomes part of the story ending – nothing is a lose end in this book!

But my favourite spread is the **SPOILER ALERT** one where we see Cedric turn down the princess and declare his feelings for her brother, the prince. This page goes through so many milestones: being true to yourself, putting yourself out there and also the family’s reactions – initially shock and then acceptance. This is a powerful spread and the illustrations do a wonderful job.

The Verdict:
This is a fun, joyful rhyming story of a knight with a difference – and a big heart. There are twists and turns throughout that make this an enjoyable and humorous read. But there is also a strong clear message – to be who you are and to stand proud. Cedric shows he is the bravest knight of all by marrying the prince. And what I also loved was that at the end of this book, the publisher has included a spread on the message.
