Title: Unraveling Rose
Author: Brian Wray
Illustrator: Shiloh Penfield
The Story:
Teddy Rabbit Rose likes being named Rose and she likes playing with the little boy who hugs her at bedtime. Rose likes everything to be perfect so when she finds a thread loose on her arm, she tries to pull it off, but it gets longer. She tries to leave it alone but she can’t stop pulling it and it stops her from enjoying her life. Can she learn to control her OCD?
Favourite Spread:
Shiloh’s illustrations are lovely and playful throughout.
My favourite illustration depicts Rose’s compulsive need to pull the thread. This page ties the book together, the story as well as the emotional journey Rose is going on.
The Verdict:
I found this book incredibly moving with a perfect balance between story and message. This is a beautifully told story which makes the reality of living with OCD relatable for children. Another lovely touch is at the end of the book, where the publisher has included some information on OCD.
