Title: One More Time (Bright Start Series)
Author: Nancy Loewen
Illustrator: Hazel Michelle Quintanilla
A quick note on The Bright Start Series:
First, the books can be read in any order! The Bright Start series of board books opens conversations about emotions and mental well-being, providing guardians with the tools and language needed to develop and nurture emotional intelligence in their child. Bright Start responds to recent research showing that emotional development begins in infancy, when children first bond with their caregivers. Early development of emotional intelligence helps children to form healthy and long-lasting relationships, builds the foundations for stable mental health, and lays the groundwork for academic achievement.
The Story:
When a young child receives a blue scooter for their birthday, they are over the moon! But it’s a bit harder to ride than it looks. They fall, a lot, but most importantly, with the encouragement of their grandad, they always get back up.
Favourite Spread:
Just as this story has simple but powerful words, Hazel’s illustrations are the same, using the colour blue to great effect throughout. We all know what it’s like when you are on the brink of giving up and I love this image of the child with their grandad.
My favourite spread was this one. We see the falls and the bumps and then we see the perseverance: “One more time!”
The Verdict:
Perseverance is a skill we all need throughout our whole lives and I love that this book introduces the idea in such a positive way to 1-3 year olds. This lovely board book has a simple but powerful message: never give up. A great addition to The Bright Start series.
