The Story:
Dewdrop the axolotl (a Mexican walking fish!) loves cheerleading and is determined to cheer on all of his friends as this year’s sports fair. As the event draws near, Mia the weightlifting turtle, Newman the musical newt, and three minnows who love to cook are all feeling the pressure. There are so many things to worry about. What if Mia isn’t strong enough? Why can’t Newton get any inspiration? What if everyone hates the minnows’ food? But the real question is, can Dewdrop remind his friends what really matters?

Favourite Spread:
Katie has created a comic-book feel in this book which works well with the message-heavy dialogue.

Dewdrop is a lovely warm and bubbly character as well as a great, diverse group of friends. I really liked how Dewdrop is so supportive of his friends and this was my favourite spread.

The Verdict:
I like the quirky comic-book style illustrations and that Dewdrop is an unusual animal. The messages of believing in yourself and trusting in your own abilities shine through loud and clear. It was refreshing to read a book where the main character wasn’t the centre of the story, but the friends, and Dewdrop supporting them.
