Title: Taking Time
Author: Jo Loring-Fisher
Illustrator: Jo Loring-Fisher
The Story:
Inspired by the principles of mindfulness, this gentle, illustrated poem invites children from all walks of life, to take the time to appreciate all the wonderful things around us. From the sound of the sea, to the shape of a snowflake. And most importantly, to take the time to cherish one another.
Favourite Spread:
Jo’s illustrations are gorgeous and bring the poem to life. Each page contains one simple but beautiful line of the poem, inviting us to take the time to reflect on an aspect of the natural world. I loved this spread of the sky.
The spreads are all so different which will captivate the reader. The poem also inspires you to stretch your imagination and Jo has achieved this through her illustrations, particularly in mine and my daughter’s favourite spread of the sea.
There are lots of little details for children to pick up. In fact, at the end of the books is a page which asks children to go back and find different cultural keepsakes within the book.
The Verdict:
This is a fantastic introduction to the principles of mindfulness for children. Taking time to appreciate life is a universal concept and this is absolutely a universal book, that will resonate with children from all social and cultural backgrounds. Jo’s inclusion of keepsakes from cultures across the globe is a lovely way for children to learn about other cultures in a way that is still relatable to their own lives.
It’s hard to describe, but I have a real sense of being at peace as I write this blog post. Each and every time I read this book, I am left feeling calm and grateful for all the wonderful things in the world. Taking Time really does show the power and beauty of a picture book!
